"Downtown" in Top 30 music

Well, it's Friday night, and people all over these great United States are headed downtown, or, like me, they are at least pondering the idea of doing so. Plenty of songs from the Billboard year-end Top 30 charts (1951-2015) mention downtown, including this novelty hit from the 1950s, and this one, too. This music video essay begins with a clip from 1965 of the quintessential downtown song and then proceeds chronologically into the present decade. Buckle up for the ride, there are some real dandies here.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" was a song by the rock and roll group, The Hollies, and released on February 1, 1972 as a single on the Parlophone Records label. It was released soon after Allan Clarke, who was featured on lead guitar as well as lead vocal had left the group, from their album "Distant Light" (1970).
In the music industry, arguably the worst tragedy that can befall an artist is to die in their prime, when he or she is just beginning to break through to the mainstream and reach people on a national level.
